Defense key for Bluejays first round victory

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – (Box ScoreBracket) In its seventh appearance at the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship, the Bluejays of Tabor (Kan.) win a ticket to the second round Thursday morning beating Hastings (Kan.), 68-44. Tabor will play the winner of No. 2 Saint Francis (Ill.) and No. 7 Asbury (Ky.) on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Strong defense from the Bluejays held Hastings to 44 points and 18 turnovers making this the Broncos second lowest game this season. Tabor has held ten opponents to 50 points and under throughout the season including its first round win today. 

Freshman Tena Loewen had a good showing on the day defensively and offensively, grabbing 12 total rebounds, nine points and four steals. The Bluejays used the charity stripe to its advantage going 15-of-22. As a team Tabor was 25-of-52 from the field, 3-of-11 from behind the arc and brought down 39 rebounds.

Hastings struggled today, only connecting on 17-of-55 shots from the field. High scorer Teeka Thompson led her team as the only player in double-digits with 17. The Broncos end their season 19-12.
