By Alan Grosbach, Manager of Communications and Sports Information

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Karly Linton of Spring Arbor (Mich.) has been named the NAIA National Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week and teammate Sarah Yancer has been tabbed National Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Linton and Yancer, who were selected based on their performances from Sept. 9 – 15, are the first teammate to claim National Player of the Week honors in the same week since Megan Marshall and Kristin Perrine of Indiana Wesleyan on Sept. 7, 2010.

Linton, a midfielder from Midland, Mich., scored four times – two game-winning goals – in three victories last week for Spring Arbor. After opening the week with a goal in the Cougars’ 4-2 victory at Concordia (Mich.) on Sept. 10, the senior netted arguably her most important goal of the young season in the 98th minute against then-No. 5 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.). The golden-goal score secured the upset victory for Spring Arbor. Linton wrapped up her stellar week with two goals and an assist against St. Francis (Ill.). The performance marked her second multi-goal outing of the season. Linton, a 2012 NAIA All-America selection, ranks second nationally in game winning goals (4) and seventh in total goals (9).

Yancer, a sophomore goalkeeper from Freeland, Mich., allowed no goals while making 15 saves in 252 minutes in net for the Cougars. She registered her first shutout of the season with eight saves in Spring Arbor’s 1-0 overtime victory over Olivet Nazarene. Yancer then anchored the Cougars in their third team shutout of the season against St. Francis with a six-save effort in 77 minutes of action. She has compiled a 1.44 goals against average through eight matches.
