MOBILE, Ala. — (Results | Bracket) After multiple rain delays and weather stoppages, defending champion Georgia Gwinnett and Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) have moved on and will play in the 2015 NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championship final match. The semifinal round was scheduled to be completed on Friday afternoon before inclement weather halted play for the day.
The women’s semifinals resumed this afternoon, and were completed right before the rain fell again. The finals of both men’s and women’s action were originally scheduled to be completed after the finish of the women’s semifinals on Saturday afternoon, but showers continued to fall before play could begin.
Finals play has been postponed until Sunday morning. Details on start times for both men’s and women’s championship final matches will be announced when they become available.
In the semifinals, the Warhawks were the first school to punch their ticket to the final match with a 5-2 win over Lindsey Wilson (Ky.). Auburn Montgomery strolled out to a 2-1 lead in doubles before gaining three victories in singles action. Kelly Southwood and Celine Lenertz were bright spots for the Warhawks, winning their double match, 9-7, while also adding singles competition wins.
The team of Fiona Cury and Jessica King for the Blue Raiders took down Claudine Maheu and Alice Baudeigne in doubles No. 2, 8-3. In No. 1 singles, Henar Munoz was able to earn the other point for Lindsey Wilson over Alice Baudeigne (6-3, 6-1).
The defending champion Grizzlies had a battle with Xavier (La.), as the Gold Nuggets held a 2-1 doubles lead going into singles play. When the pressure was on, both dealing with multiple weather delays and a hefty on-court challenge, Georgia Gwinnett came through in the clutch. The top-team took No. 4 through No. 6 singles, and Valeria Podda defeated Nour Abbes of Xavier in No. 1 singles to head back to the title match.
Caroline Vernet would not let her squad go down without a fight, as she defeated Georgia Gwinnett’s Laura Wehner, 6-0, 6-3, in No. 2 singles.
Lindsey Wilson’s 2014-15 season comes to a close at 17-8, while the Gold Nuggets fall one step short of the final match as well, and end at 17-10.
The aforementioned title matches for both men’s and women’s finals will be announced when the details become available.
