Georgia Gwinnett and Xavier Women's Tennis Semifinal Recap

MOBILE, Ala. – No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett advanced to the teams fifth-consecutive national championship match in the 2018 NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championship with a 5-1 semifinal win over No. 3 Xavier (La.) at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. 

The No. 2 seeded and back-to-back national champions,  Georgia Gwinnett, rolled through both SCAD Atlanta (Ga.) and William Woods (Mo.) in the first two rounds and won both matches 5-0.

The Gold Nuggets of Xavier breezed through their first two matches as they downed SCAD Savannah (Ga.) 5-1 and then took no breaks in the quarterfinals to knock off LSU Alexandria (La.) 5-0.

Georgia Gwinnett dominated No. 1 doubles by a score of  8-2.

The Gold Nuggets and Grizzlies went deep into the No. 3 doubles match, but Georgia Gwinnett won the match 8-6.

Xavier was not finished yet as the No. 2 doubles match was pushed to a tiebreaker. Xavier came out on top in the tiebreaker and captured their first point of the match, winning the doubles match 9-8 (3).  

Georgia Gwinnett found the three points they needed in the singles to finish the match in a dominant fashion. Madeline Bosnjak and Chiara Rebecchi almost finished with identical wins. Bosnjak finished first 6-2, 6-0  and Rebecchi would capture the fourth Grizzly point finishing 6-3 in the first set and 6-0 in the second. Maria Prados Cid who solidified the win, taking the fifth point and the matchat the No. 4 singles spot. Prados Cid finished the first set 6-1 and the second set 6-1 to send the Grizzlies to the national championship. 

Georgia Gwinnet has an amazing 17-1 record in the national tournament, which is the all-time highest win percentage at the national championships. They will look to win their third title in a row and fourth in five years. The Grizzlies will face the Keiser (Fla.) Seahawks at 10 a.m. ET Friday, May 19, at the Mobile Tennis Center.
