By Alan Grosbach, Manager of Communications and Sports Information
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – (Full Schedule | Bracket) The semifinals for the 2014 NAIA Volleyball National Championship, presented by J&L Staffing and Recruiting, are set as four team punched tickets with quarterfinal wins. No. 2 Park (Mo.), No. 3 Biola (Calif.), No. 4 Texas at Brownsville and No. 9 Viterbo (Wis.) will face off tomorrow at 11 a.m. CST with a chance to play for the national title on the line.
Defending national champion Texas at Brownsville cruised to a 3-0 win against a No. 5 Missouri Baptist squad that was coming off an emotional five-set win against No. 12 Vanguard (Calif.) in the morning session. With the victory, the Ocelots have now won five-straight quarterfinal matches and improve to 6-1 all-time in the round of eight.
The Ocelot hitters were dominant throughout the match, ending the contest with a combined .368 hitting percentage, including a .563-effort in the second set. Bojana Mitrovic led the charge for Texas at Brownsville with 14 kills and 12 digs.
Texas at Brownsville, which is vying to become the first program to win back-to-back titles since former-member Fresno Pacific (Calif.) won four-straight from 2007 – 2010. The Ocelots bring an eight-match winning streak into their semifinal showdown with Viterbo.
Missouri Baptist falls to 1-2 all-time in the quarterfinals and closes the season with a 38-4 record.
Riding the momentum of a first round win against a talented Northwestern (Iowa) team, Viterbo picked up arguably the biggest upset of the championship so far with a 3-1 win against top-seeded Rocky Mountain (Mont.). The V-Hawks reach the semifinals in only their second national championship appearance. Outside hitter Alicia Olson posted her second double-double of the day – 18th on the season – with 27 kills and 12 digs. Olson leads the championship in total kills with 104.
Libero Jennifer Krentz also played an inspired match, tallying her second 30-plus dig performance of the national championship with 37 – the second-best single-match performance at this year’s final site.
Rocky Mountain is the first overall No. 1 seed to fail to advance beyond the quarterfinals since Fresno Pacific lost to California Baptist, 3-1, in 2005. The Battlin’ Bears, who entered the contest riding a 30-match winning streak and were playing in their first-ever quarterfinals, end the year with a 32-3 record.
The nightcap featured a pair of hard-fought contests, as Park downed perennial powerhouse in seventh-seed Concordia (Calif.), 3-1, and Biola downed championship newcomer Eastern Oregon, 3-1.
The Pirates (38-0), who remain the NAIA’s only unbeaten team with the win, dropped the opening set for the first time this season 25-21 to the Eagles. However, Park stormed through the next three frames, including a 25-11 spread in set No. 3, to claim the match. American Midwest Player of the Year Wendy Romero registered more than 20 kills for the second time in four matches with 21, while Wanessa Siqueira posted her third double-double of the season with 19 kills and 13 digs.
Concordia, which had previously never lost a quarterfinal match in seven previous trips, ends the season with a 34-4 record.
Biola split the opening two sets with Eastern Oregon before closing the match with 25-13 and 25-20 wins in sets three and four. Three Eagles registered double-digit kills, while setters Ashton Arbuthnot and Allison Spencer combined for 55 assists. The squad also held a 12-5 advantage in team blocks, aided in large part by 10 blocks from Amy Weststeyn.
Both the Pirates and Eagles bring long winning streaks into the contest, as Park has won 39-straight dating back to last season and Biola has won 20-straight.
