SIOUX CITY, Iowa – (Full Schedule | Bracket) Winning teams, Georgetown (Ky.), Midland (Neb.) and Vanguard (Calif.) will see quarterfinal action after missing out in the 2014 national championship. No. 9 Georgetown is the only lower seeded team to advance to play tonight after beating No. 8 Hastings (Neb.) in one of the five set match matches in the morning session.
In the first win on the day No. 5 Biola (Calif.) advanced after sweeping the No. 12 Madonna (Mich.) (25-15, 25-15, 25-19). With this win, the Eagles advance to quarterfinal play for the fourth year in-a-row, and looks to redeem themselves after last year’s semifinals loss against Park (Mo.). Biola will take on No. 4 Columbia (Mo.) at 5:45 p.m.
In the first five-set match of the first round, Georgetown fought back to win three-straight after falling behind 0-2. The back-and-forth battle ultimately ended with an attack error by Hastings to give the Tigers the match, 18-16. Georgetown has not made it to the quarterfinal since 2009 when it was defeated by Fresno Pacific (Calif.) in the championship match. The Tigers tangle with No. 1 Lindsey Wilson at 5:45 p.m.
For the first time in school history, No. 7 Vanguard (Calif.) advances to the quarterfinals after the day’s second five-set match against No. 10 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.). The Lions had good production from setters Rory McCloy and Kelly Dalrymple who had double-digit assists throughout the match and featured four players who recorded double-digit kills. Vanguard will meet No. 2 Viterbo (Wis.) tonight at 8 p.m.
In the second sweep of the day, No. 6 Midland (Neb.) took care of No. 11 College of Idaho to advance in elimination play. The match between the two teams was even statistically, with both teams recording close to the same numbers in digs and kills. Junior Darcy Berry recorded double-digit digs to help the Warriors take the match and face Missouri Baptist at 8:00 p.m.
