2010 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Qualifiers Announced

Nov. 14, 2010

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has officially released the 2010 Men’s Soccer National Championship qualifiers for the 52nd annual event. The 30-team National Championship Opening Round will take place on 15 on-campus sites on Nov. 20. The winners of the National Championship Opening Round games, as well as Mobile (Ala.), will advance to the final site from Nov. 29 - Dec. 4 in Orange Beach, Ala.

Opening Round pairings will be released Sunday by 9 p.m. CST.

This year’s 31 teams include 24 automatic qualifiers (conferences/independent/unaffiliated champions) and seven at-large bids. Seven programs are repeat selections and qualified for the 2009 championship.

Defending national Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) enters the postseason with a 15-3-1 overall record. With eight national championships, the Blue Raiders trail only Quincy (Ill.) for the most titles with 11. Four of Lindsey Wilson’s trophies have come since 2000.

Simon Fraser (B.C.) is making its 23rd appearance, the most of any active school. Simon Fraser is tied with Lindsey Wilson for the most wins in national championship action (40). The Blue Raiders are playing in their 17th straight national championship, the longest active stretch.

There are eight schools that have qualified for the first time in school history. Six other schools are searching for their first National Championship victory. Seven of the current teams hold at least one National Championship title, with two (Lindsey Wilson and Simon Fraser) claiming multiple rings.

Four schools enter the postseason with an undefeated mark: Hastings (Neb.) (20-0), Maine-Fort Kent (21-0), Notre Dame (Ohio) (19-0) and Rio Grande (Ohio) (21-0).

Seven at-large berths were awarded based on the final official NAIA Men’s Soccer Modified Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). The modified RPI consists of the team’s modified winning percentage, the opponents’ winning percentage and the cumulative ranking points from the current NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. Each of the three values has a weighted percentage calculated in the modified RPI. The RPI modifies the value of home/away/neutral results and adds more value for games against opponents ranked in their respective national poll. NeuLion is the NAIA's Digital Media Partner and official video-streaming company of nine select NAIA National Championship events. All 15 matches from Orange Beach will be available via live video stream for $24.95 and any single day can be purchased for $9.95.
