LEWISTON, Idaho – (Box Score) Scott Sebald tossed his fifth complete game of the season, as No. 8 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) downed No. 9 The Master’s (Calif.), 7-1, Friday afternoon in game two of the 2016 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series.

Sebald (11-3) chose a perfect time to have one of his best starts of the season, as the senior lefthander scattered four hits and allowed only one run in nine innings of work. Sebald ended the day with a season-high tying 12 strikeouts, which gives him 12 appearances with at least eight strikeouts this year.

“It’s big that we didn’t have to use our bullpen,” said Lindsey Wilson head coach Jonathan Burton. “You could tell that he (Sebald) was a little sluggish late, but one thing Scott does is he battles, never shows emotion, and is easy to talk to about adjustments. Obviously, our team feeds off Scott.”

The win is Lindsey Wilson’s first-ever in program history at the World Series. The Blue Raiders advance to face top-seeded Faulkner (Ala.) tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. PDT.

“There’s a lot of confidence on this team,” added Burton. “Having a team that has been in these situations before is key to us hopefully advancing in this tournament. They just don’t seem to get phased.”

A pair of errors in the second inning led to Lindsey Wilson taking an early 1-0 lead. With two outs in the inning, Dustin Woody hit a grounder towards second base that appeared like an easy out, however the Mustangs’ second baseman slipped and then threw the ball away. The miscue allowed Brandon Munoz to score from second base.

The Blue Raiders moved the scoreline to 3-0 in the fifth, and again errors played a key role. Edgar Lebron sparked the rally with a one-out single. Three pitches later, the senior centerfielder swiped his team-best 26th base of the season. Lebron advanced to third on the play as the throw skipped away and into centerfield.

On the next pitch, Aaron Ashton flipped a single over the drawn-in infield to plate the run. A wild pitch, single and misplayed grounder scored Ashton to round out the inning’s score total.

Lindsey Wilson added one in the sixth on Ashton’s second single of the game, which scored Victor Nazario from third and pushed the Blue Raider lead to 4-0.

The Mustangs’ Nick Covello smashed a 0-1 pitch over the centerfield wall to put the club on the board and cut the deficit to 4-1 in the top of the seventh. The home run is Covello’s 18th of the season and first at the 2016 World Series.

The Blue Raiders blew the game open with a three-run eighth to push their advantage to 7-1. A single by Caleb Ratzman and double by Lebron set the table for the inning. Ashton sized the opportunity, driving in his third RBI of the game with a single to right field. One pitch later, designated hitter Austin Atwell cleared the bases with a triple to right field.

Ashton and Lebron led the offense for Lindsey Wilson with three hits each.

The Master’s starter Conner Menez (11-3) allowed four runs (three earned) in six innings to take the loss.

The loss snaps a six-game winning streak for the Mustangs, and puts the club in the elimination side of the bracket. The Master’s awaits the loser of No. 4 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) and No. 5 Science & Arts (Okla.). First pitch for that game is slated for 12 p.m.
