LEWISTON, Idaho – (Box Score) A strong pitching performance by Brad Loshe propelled No. 9 The Master’s (Calif.) past No. 5 Science & Arts (Okla.), 6-1, Saturday afternoon in the elimination bracket of the 2016 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series. The 60th annual event is being played out for the 17th-straight season – 25th time overall – at Harris Field.
Loshe tallied his third complete game of the season and second-straight, scattering six hits and one run. The senior right-hander struck out three en route to his 10th win of the season. Loshe has not lost a start since falling to April 9 to Golden State Athletic Conference rival Menlo (Calif.).
The victory keeps the Mustangs’ hopes for their first-ever World Series title alive. The Master’s, who are now 2-2 all-time in elimination games at the World Series, improve to 42-18 overall and 4-5 all-time at the event. The Mustangs next opponent is the loser of No. 2 Tennessee Wesleyan and No. 7 Sterling (Kan.). Game time is scheduled for 9 a.m. PDT on Monday.
Five different Mustangs’ registered multi-hit performances, including a 2-for-3 and two RBI effort from No. 9 hitter Aaron Shackelford.
The Master’s drew first blood, scoring two runs in the top of the second. Back-to-back singles by David Shaeffer and Collin Nyenhuis set the stage for a big inning. Sheaffer scored two pitches later on an errant throw by the Science & Arts’ shortstop. Shackelford picked up his first of the two aforementioned RBI with a single to drive in Nyenhuis.
The Mustangs added another run in the top of the sixth, before Science & Arts cut the deficit to 3-1 with a run of their own in the bottom half. The Drovers’ Tyler Melton deposited a double to right center to open the inning. Chris Musick plated the senior two batters later with a single.
The Master’s added insurance runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth en route to the five-run spread.
Drover starter Alsis Herrera (11-4) took the loss after surrendering four runs (two earned) in 6.2 innings of work.
Cesar Figuereo was the only multi-hit individual for Science & Arts. The senior second baseman ended the game 2-for-4 at the dish with a double.
The loss drops Science & Arts to 48-13 on the season, and eliminates the club from its first-ever World Series. The Drovers, who outscored their opponents an unprecedented 45-3 in the Opening Round, scored only two runs in two games at this year’s event.
