Salcedo, Lindsey Wilson hold off AUM 15-12

LEWISTON, Idaho – (Box Score) Leadoff hitter Alec Salcedo drove in six runs and James Roll pitched out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to help Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) defeat Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) 15-12 in elimination play at the 2016 Avista NAIA Baseball World Series on Monday.
The wild contest saw AUM rally from a 15-2 deficit and also set Series records for most runs combined in one inning (17) grand slams in a game and inning (two) and pitchers used by a team (nine by AUM).
With the win, Lindsey Wilson improves to 44-24 on the season and 2-3 all-time at the World Series. The Blue Raiders will be back in action at noon on Tuesday against the loser of Monday night’s Bellevue vs. Tennessee-Wesleyan contest. Auburn-Montgomery finishes the season at 46-18 and is now 8-8 all-time at the Series.
Monday’s contest appeared to be all Lindsey Wilson as the Blue Raiders scored in each of the first three innings, including three in the top of the first, for a 6-2 lead. Lindsey Wilson then scored nine in the top of the sixth, including four on a grand slam by Salcedo for his first home run of the season. That put the Blue Raiders ahead 15-2.
AUM battled back with eight runs in the bottom of the inning and picked up a grand slam of its own from Dalton Kelly. That cut the lead to 15-10.
In all, the inning featured 17 runs on nine hits, eight walks, two hit batters, two errors and two wild pitches. The frame took 58 minutes to complete.
The Blue Raiders got rolling early as Austin Atwell and Brandon Munoz had RBI sacrifice flies in the first, while Jan Carlos Ortiz had an RBI single. After Salcedo drove in his first run on a ground out in the second, Lindsey Wilson made it 6-0 in the top of the third on an error and sacrifice fly by Salcedo.
AUM picked up its first two runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Michael Tedford and a grounder by Kelley.
Lindsey Wilson appeared to break the game open with its eight-run sixth on four hits, three walks, a hit batter and an error. Atwell drove in the first run with a double, while Ortiz added an RBI single. A dropped fly ball and a wild pitch accounted for two more runs, while Ryan Harper was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Salcedo then followed with his grand slam.
AUM answered with eight runs in the bottom half of the inning. Mac Seibert and Cody Rush had RBI singles, while Houston Davenport was hit by a pitch and Tedford walked, both with the bases loaded, to force in runs. Kelley then hit his fourth home run of the season to make it 15-10.
The Warhawks added a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Kelley, his fifth RBI of the contest, and they added another in the ninth on an RBI single by Tedford.
However, after issuing that run with the bases loaded, Roll struck out Kelley and got Kaleb Harris and Brandon Davis on consecutive fly outs to end the game.
Salcedo finished 3-for-6 with his six RBI and three runs scored, while Ortiz went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Atwell also drove in two for the Blue Raiders.
Kelley was 2-for-6 with five RBI to pace the Warhawks, while Tedford was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Lindsey Wilson starter Daniel Ferrell (8-4) picked up the win. He allowed eight hits and eight runs in five innings of work with three strikeouts. Roll picked up his first save as he went 2.1 innings and allowed four hits and one run with one strikeout.
AUM starter Kade Suther (8-4) took the loss. He allowed five hits and four runs in 1.1 innings. Cole Goodwin, the third of nine pitchers, was the most effective with 2.2 innings of one-hit ball and three strikeouts.\
In all, the two teams combined for 30 hits, 11 walks, five hit batters and six errors. There were 321 pitches thrown in the contest by 12 pitchers.
