AIB issues blanket release for student-athletes

NAIA rules that may apply to AIB student-athletes:

• AIB student-athletes can transfer to another NAIA institution and the transfer residency requirement will not apply (assuming they transfer within one year of the end of the 2014-15 school year).

• AIB student-athletes are free to reach out and contact any NAIA coach or administrator.

• AIB students looking to transfer or contact NCAA, NJCAA or USCAA schools would fall under those associations' rules and should check with those organizations as to what restrictions may be in place.

• No special provisions for Seasons of Competition or Terms of Attendance apply in this situation; any student-athlete who wants to transfer immediately would still have the normal Seasons of Competition or Terms of Attendance rules applied.

DES MOINES —  AIB College of Business, Des Moines, announced Feb. 5 that it will discontinue athletics at the end of the 2015 spring season as part of its merger with the University of Iowa.

School officials have said that AIB will honor athletic scholarships for AIB students through 2016 for those who choose to stay at the institution.

On Friday Feb. 6, Al Dorenkamp, AIB athletics director, issued a broad release for all student-athletes, allowing them to be contacted and recruited by any interested institution immediately.  Under normal circumstances, NAIA rules prevent coaches and administrators from contacting any student-athlete enrolled at another four-year institution.

The letter also stated:
Institutional and scholarship release will be granted following the final day of the winter term on February 26, 2015.

Transcripts will be made available to all student-athletes for use in the transfer process.
