NAIA Baseball Pitcher & Player of the Week ? No. 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Nerio Barreto of Talladega (Ala.) has been named the NAIA National Baseball Player of the Week and Jeremy Gooding of Madonna (Mich.) has been tabbed National Pitcher of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Barreto and Gooding were selected based on their performances from March 4 - 10 and were chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.

Barreto, a native of Zulia, Venezuela, hit 1.000 for the week with nine hits in nine at-bats, including four doubles, two triples, four RBIs and seven runs scored. The junior outfielder's highlight game came in the game-one of a double header against Bethel (Tenn.) on March 4. Barreto finished the contest 4-for-4 with three doubles and one triple.

On the season, Barreto ranks fifth in the NAIA in doubles (11) and 10th in total bases (54). His .478 batting average leads the Tornados and is 18th in the NAIA.

Gooding, a senior from Livonia, Mich., finished 2-0 last week, including a 3-2 victory over No. 6 Point Park (Pa.) on March 4. Against Point Park, Gooding allowed two runs on four hits while striking out a season-high 10. He walked one batter in the effort. Gooding's second victory of the week was an 8-0 combined no hitter against Avila on March 9. He struck out nine and walked five in six innings of work against the Eagles.

On the season, Gooding owns a 3-0 record and 1.42 earned run average.
