VICTORIA, Texas - University of Houston-Victoria (Texas) baseball coach Terry Puhl earned his 200th-career coaching victory as the Jaguars’ head coach on Friday with an 11-2 win over Wayland Baptist University (Texas).
Puhl reached the milestone in his eighth season with the Jaguars and currently holds a 200-161 record.
Three of his previous seven squads have recorded 30-plus wins, while each team has won 20 or more games with five of the teams reaching the postseason. He has an 18-13 postseason record with two Association of Independent Institution Conference Championships (2009, 2011) and three appearances in the NAIA National Champions Opening Round Tournament.
The Jaguars did it in style for Puhl’s 200th win as they banged out four home runs and starter Andrew Walker took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against Wayland Baptist. UHV finished with 13 hits, including a pair of home runs by Victor Coronado and one each from Dylan Bates and Wesley Kutac.
Puhl, a former outfielder for the Houston Astros, has been the Jaguars’ only head coach and was named the 2009 A.I.I. Conference Coach of the Year.
A National League All-Star in 1978, he was named the Canadian Baseball Player of the Year in 1981, was selected to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. He was also part of the Astros’ N.L. West Division championship teams in 1980 and 1986.
Puhl will be looking for his 201st win on Friday when the Jaguars take on St. Edward’s University in a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader in Austin. They return home Saturday to host St. Edward’s in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Riverside Stadium.
