Tabor Eliminates Lindsey Wilson, 2-0

LEWISTON, Idaho – (Box Score) Senior left-hander Russell Longworth threw his second complete-game shutout in his last three starts, as No. 3 Tabor (Kan.) eliminated No. 7 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), 2-0, Saturday morning at the 2015 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series.

With the victory, Tabor improves to 54-11 on the season and advances to play the loser of No. 1 Oklahoma Baptist and No. 8 Concordia (Calif.) at 12 p.m. on Monday. The Bluejays are 3-3 all-time at the World Series, with five games being decided by two runs-or-less.

“We knew coming in that it was going to be a tough game – no doubt,” said Tabor head coach Mark Standiford. “We were playing a really good team. Russell (Longworth) has been outstanding for us his last three outings. We had a lot of confidence in him, and he didn’t let us down at all.”

Longworth kept the Blue Raider hitters, who entered the World Series batting .311 as a team, out of rhythm the entire game, scattering five hits and striking out four over nine innings. He threw 89 total pitches and induced four double-plays. The Waterford, Calif., native has now won five-straight starts en route to a 12-3 record. Overall, Longworth boasts eight complete games this year.

Tabor scored an unearned run in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The Bluejays were the beneficiaries of a potential double-play ball that slid under the glove of the Lindsey Wilson shortstop. Michael Baca, who singled up the middle to lead off the inning, scored the game’s first run.

The Bluejays lit the scoreboard again in the bottom of the sixth to make it 2-0, as Matthew Molbury doubled down the first base line to score Alex Couch from first. Couch reached via single and advanced into scoring position on Scott Sebald’s only wild pitch of the game.

Counch paced the offense for Tabor with three hits. Molbury and Baca also had two hits, respectively.

Despite taking the loss, Lindsey Wilson starter Scott Sebald pitched a strong seven innings. The junior left-hander surrendered two runs – one earned – on seven hits and two walks. Sebald, who fell to 10-4 on the year, has only allowed two earned in his last 44 innings, including today’s game.

The Blue Raiders bats struggled again today. Mid-South Conference Player of the Year Alex Bautista was held hitless (0-for-4) for a second-straight game. The senior came to Lewiston sporting a .383 batting average with 19 home runs and 72 RBI.

Left fielder Steven Paredes was the lone bright spot for the Lindsey Wilson offense, registering two hits – both singles.

Lindsey Wilson did not have an individual advance past second base in the game.

With the loss, the Blue Raiders fall to 41-19 overall and are eliminated from the World Series. Lindsey Wilson was making its first-ever appearance.
