LEWISTON, Idaho – (Box Score) Senior right-handed pitcher Braulio Torrez-Perez emphatically put another check mark on the Bellevue (Neb.) baseball team’s to-do list after his complete game five-hitter helped the Bruins defeat Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) 4-1 in loser-out play at the 2016 Avista NAIA World Series at Harris Field on Tuesday afternoon.

After Bellevue (53-11) lost its second game at its Opening Round tournament, the coaching staff put together a check list of all the things the team would need to do to win the World Series title. That list keeps getting shorter, thanks to performances like Torrez-Perez had on Tuesday.

Mixing up six pitches, Torrez-Perez improved to 11-1 on the season with his gem. He allowed one earned run and hit two batters, but didn’t issue a walk and struck out three. He threw 105 pitches, 73 of them for strikes.

“I liked the slider today but all of my pitches seemed to work,” Torrez-Perez said. “Mentally, I was a little nervous coming into this one. My parents and my high school coach are here and they helped me along with my teammates.”

The Federal Way, Wash., native who played at Green River Community College in Auburn, Wash., said this outing was his by far his favorite this season because of what was on the line.

“This game shows we just never quit,” he said, shortly after being the player who got to check the box off the check list hanging in the Bruins’ dugout. “I’m excited. This is a good team and I got great support today.”

Bellevue is one of four teams left from the original 10-team field and improves to 22-24 all-time in 14 appearances at the Series. The Bruins won the title in 1995.

The Bruins will play at either 3:05 p.m. or 6:35 p.m. (PDT) on Wednesday, depending on how the other two games turn out on Tuesday.

Lindsey Wilson finished the season at 44-25 and also had an outstanding pitching performance. Starter Tyler Russell, a junior right-hander, allowed three earned runs and nine hits in 7.1 innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. He ran out of gas in the eighth when Bellevue scored twice.

The Bruins got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the third. Jake Browne started the rally with a single to center and was replaced by courtesy runner Kevin Rodriguez, who stole second base. After a strikeout, Connor Garrison rippled a double down the left-field line to score Rodriguez.

The Blue Raiders tied the game in the top of the sixth. Caleb Ratzman hit a two-out single and Aaron Ashton was hit by a pitch. Austin Atwell then singled to score Ratzman.

In the bottom of the sixth, Bellevue regained the lead when Derik Bontempo singled and eventually scored on a double by Browne.

Bellevue put up its finals two runs in the eighth when Joe Moran reached on a throwing error by Russell and scored on Bontempo’s sacrifice fly to right. Joe Mancuso then hit a solo home run to left for his ninth homer of the season. Bontempo, Browne and Garrison each finished with two hits and an RBI for Bellevue, while Jan Carlos Ortiz had two hits for Lindsey Wilson.

“We just want to keep this going and check off another game on the list,” Torres-Perez said.
