Georgia Gwinnett Plates Eight in Fourth Inning on Day Three

LEWISTON, Idaho – [BRACKET | SCHEDULE | CHAMPIONSHIP APP] Georgia Gwinnett brought eight around to score in the fourth inning as the offensive numbers were big throughout day three of the 2021 Avista NAIA World Series. Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) came away with a 9-6 win to begin the day before IU Southeast (Ind.) held-on to its season with a 9-7 win over Keiser in an elimination game. Backed by a three-run home run in the first inning, Central Methodist remained undefeated after its 4-3 victory over Faulkner in the evening tilt.

 

GAME NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS

No. 3 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) def. No. 9 LSU Shreveport (La.) 9-6

  • Lewis-Clark State recorded the first run of the game, thanks to a Jack Johnson home run, his seventh of the year, to left field to make it a 1-0 game in the top of the first.
  • LSU Shreveport responded in the bottom half with a crooked number to get the lead. The Pilots scored four runs on four hits, capped-off with a three-run blast by Carlos Pineyro. It was the sophomore’s seventh home run of the year.
  • The Warriors cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth. Luke White doubled and scored to put his team down by one, 4-3.
  • Lewis-Clark State exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth. White again put the Lewiston fans on their feet with his 11th home run of the season to make it a 7-4 lead.
  • The Pilots got one back in the bottom of the fifth. Taylor Fajardo hit his 16th home run of the season, a solo shot, to make it an 8-5 game.
  • Brock Ephan put the final run of the day up for the Warriors in the top of the eighth with his 16th home run of the season to give his team a 9-5 lead.
  • Miguel Morgan followed in the bottom half of the inning with his seventh home run of the season.
  • Jesse Parker entered in the first inning and stopped the bleeding for Lewis-Clark State. The senior allowed one run on seven hits in six and one-third innings in relief.
  • Greg Blackman entered the game for the Warriors with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and preserved the win. The sophomore struck-out two and faced just three batters to continue the Warriors’ season.
  • The last time Lewis-Clark State played LSU Shreveport in a World Series game, the Pilots hit a walk-off grand slam to win the game.
  • Both teams combined for six home runs in the game. Each team had three in the game.

 

No. 7 IU Southeast (Ind.) def. No. 8 Keiser (Fla.) 9-7

  • Keiser scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first. Ben McConnell doubled and scored on a Mason Dinesen single to take a 1-0 lead.
  • IU Southeast tied the game in the fifth. After Clay Woeste doubled to lead-off the inning, the junior came around to score on a ground out to third. He finished two-for-three at the plate with two RBI and two doubles.
  • The Grenadiers’ offense put its stamp on the game in both the sixth and seventh innings. The team scored four in the sixth and added three in the seventh.
  • Trailing 9-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Keiser’s Tim Bouchard hit a two-run home run, his 17th of the season, to get cut the deficit to two. Mathew Catalfo came a few feet away from following with a solo home run, but it was instead a loud second out.
  • The official time of the game was three hours and 40 minutes, the longest of the World Series this year. The longest ever game in a World Series that did not go to extra innings was 4:15 minutes.
  • With the win, IU Southeast is now 2-1 in World Series play.

 

No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett def. No. 1 Southeastern (Fla.) 11-7

  • After trailing by a run after one inning, Georgia Gwinnett scored 11 runs from the second through the fourth.
  • The eight-runs the Grizzlies scored in the fourth was the second-highest single inning run total in the series this year. Southeastern’s 10 it plated on Saturday is the most.
  • Southeastern posted one run in the seventh and five in the eighth to cut the deficit to four
  • Both teams hit over .340 in the game
  • Southeastern leads the World Series with 32 runs in two games.
  • Georgia Gwinnett is now 7-6 all-time in World Series play.
  • With his two RBI today, Livingston Morris of Georgia Gwinnett leads the 2021 series with seven RBI. The junior finished two-for-three at the plate with a double and three runs scored.
  • Morris joined Griffin Keller, Nick Barnes and Cord Johnson with two RBI apiece.
  • Sam Faith and Pedro Castellano led Southeastern at the plate with three hits each.
  • Adam McKillican earned the victory for the Grizzlies. The starter allowed two runs (one earned) and nine hits in six and two-thirds of an inning with eight strikeouts to his credit.

 

No. 2 Central Methodist (Mo.) def. No. 6 Faulkner (Ala.) 4-3

  • Central Methodist led early with a three run first inning. Starting pitcher Mason Schwellenbach hit a three run home run, his 12th of the season, to give his Eagles a 1-0 lead.
  • Faulkner tied the game in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Sam Anthony reached on an error and scored on a single to left by Shawn Ross to put the first run on the board for Faulkner.
  • Ross came around to score two batters later on an RBI single from Issac Phillips.
  • John Michael Matthews tied the game with a sacrifice fly to deep center.
  • Central Methodist regained the lead in the seventh. The Eagles took advantage of three errors in the inning as Deshawn Cole singled-home the go ahead run.
  • Sergio Macias took the mound with one on and one out in the ninth and got the save, his sixth of the season.
  • July Sosa went the distance for Faulkner and recorded six strikeouts and allowed three earned runs.
  • Schwellenbach got the win for Central Methodist. The starter allowed one earned run in seven innings and struck-out nine.
  • With the win, Central Methodist improved to 2-0 in World Series play all-time.
