Makarus Belts Four Home Runs, Hits .500 to Earn Season's Fifth Baseball Player of the Week Award
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Ayden Makarus is the NAIA Baseball Player of the Week to begin the month of March, helping No. 22 Bellevue (Neb.) extend an 11-game winning streak by hitting .500 (10-for-20) with four home runs, 14 driven in, three doubles and nine runs scored.
A junior from Okotoks, Alberta, Canada, Makarus posted a 1.250 slugging percentage in a 5-0 week that included a mid-week win over Briar Cliff (Iowa) and a four-game sweep to close it against No. 25 Central Methodist (Mo.).
Makarus got his week going with a home run in the mid-week win over BCU, and in the series opener with CMU, he went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs and a pair of RBIs, homering for a second time in the week. He drew a pair of walks and scored twice in game two, Friday, but he made his biggest mark on the week in Saturday's doubleheader, going 6-for-8 with three runs, two home runs, and a pair of doubles.
He opened Saturday 3-for-3, driving in three runs with a double and a homer, and in the series finale, he was responsible for seven of the team's 11 runs, driving in six and scoring one, adding another double and another home run.
In 24 plate appearances, Makarus collected a .583 on-base percentage, including reaching safely 10 times in 14 plate appearances in the final three games of the series with Central Methodist.
Makarus and the Bruins will look to extend their winning streak in Florida this weekend, during a three-game series at No. 8 Webber International (Fla.).
