It's All About the Numbers

Oct. 22, 2005

Saturday's matchups all came down to numbers.  The top three teams were victorious while two more fell from the ranks of perfect.  Two unranked teams combined to score 122 points in a shoot-out of a game and Carroll College's (Mont.) Tyler Emmert is closing in on a national record.

Second-ranked University of St. Francis (Ind.) and #3 Morninside College (Iowa) both posted convincing victories, but fourth-ranked St. Ambrose University (Iowa) fell to #14-ranked St. Xavier University (Iowa) 38-31 in overtime.

St. Xavier (6-2) scored 14 fourth quarter points to force overtime. Jim Doherty scored the winning touchdown on a 25-yard pass from John Perryman in overtime to give the Fighting Bees their first loss (6-1).

In a Mid-South Conference game, No. 7 Pikeville (5-1) lost its first game of the season, 24-25 to #8 University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) (7-1).  Only four teams remain unbeaten- Carrolll, St. Francis, Morningside and Tabor College (Kan.).

Campbellsville University (Ky.) and Cumberland University (Tenn.) combined for 122 points as Campbellsville won 62-60.  Campbellsville's Stephen Hatchell had four TD's on the ground and threw for two more while Gregory Fountain also ran one in.  Cumberland's Brandon Janco threw for five of the six Bulldogs' scores.  Johnathan Laster returned a kickoff for the sixth touchdown.

Emmert recorded 123 yards of total offense in the Saints 47-21 victory against Montana State University-Northern on Saturday, pulling closer to Jon Kitna's career record of 12,907 total offensive yards.

Emmert stands at 12,444 yards with three regular-season games remaining.  NAIA National Records also include playoff games, which makes Emmert's chance of claiming the title well within reach.  The senior needs just 463 yards to tie Kitna.  Emmert had 2,741 yards as a freshman, 4,632 yards in 2003 and 3,210 last season.
