ALVA, Okla. – Sophomore wide receiver Korey Williams had a career day as the No. 12 Northwestern Rangers rolled up Southwestern College (Kan.) 49-3 on Family Day (Sept. 20) at Ranger Field. Williams set two school records; most touchdown passes caught with four and most receiving yards in a game with 202.
Northwestern had not trouble scoring on the opening drive, going 72 yards on eight plays capped by Billy Barefield hitting younger brother Keith Barefield for an 18-yard touchdown.
Southwestern came right back and ate up just over eight minutes as they scored on an 18-play, 61-yard drive that ended in a 34-yard field goal to put the Moundbuilders down 7-3. That would be the end of the scoring for Southwestern.
Barefield’s first touchdown pass to Williams came at the two minute mark in the first quarter, scoring on a 65-yard reception.
Barefield took matters into his own hands, scoring the third Ranger TD and allowing Northwestern to go up 21-3 with 11:28 to go in the half as he scored on a four yard keeper.
The next two touchdowns before the half ended were Barefield to Williams of the 18 and 58-yard variety. These two scores gave the Rangers a commanding 35-3 lead.
Northwestern would score two more times. Williams was hit for a 14-yard touchdown with a second to go before the end of the third quarter to get his record setting catch. Williams broke the old record of three touchdowns set by four former Rangers, spanning from 1978 to 2003. Also with that touchdown reception, Barefield tied the record for most touchdown passes in a game with five. He tied Tom Carrol who performed the feat against Southeastern in 1965.
Vincent Hill added the finishing touches on the Ranger’s 49-3 win as he scored with 5:51 to go in the game.
Williams’ 202 yards broke the old record of 199 yards which was set in 1978 against East Central by 2008 Sports Hall of Fame member Brian Clothier. Williams hauled in six catches with a long of 65 yards.
Kyle Culwell added 72 yards receiving while Jared Jackson led the rushers with 115 yards. Barefield finished 15-of-21 passing for 308 yards.
Northwestern’s offense racked up 567 yards, 337 of that which was in the air. The Rangers garnered 30 first downs and averaged 8.5 yards per play.
The Black Cloud defense was a wall, holding Southwestern to 190 total yards. Freshman linebacker Rocky Lee led all tacklers with eight tackles. Jahmar Reynolds picked up seven, while Kevin McDonald had six. Reynolds added an interception return for 81 yards, while Lamon Miller and Tyler Grey also had picks in the game.
Northwestern (2-1) will be idle next week and host Sterling College (Kan.) on October 4 in a 2 p.m. game at Ranger Field.
