2009 NAIA Football Championship Series Qualifiers Announced

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has officially announced the teams and pairings for the 2009 Football Championship Series. A total of 16 teams will play at eight first-round sites on Nov. 21. Defending national champion Sioux Falls (S.D.) will face Minot State (N.D.) in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Cougars are riding a 25-game winning streak and recently won their fourth straight Great Plains Athletic Conference Championship.

 

McPherson (Kan.) is making its first appearance in the Football Championship Series. The Bulldogs, out of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, will take on MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) in Olathe, Kan.

 

The 54th Annual Russell Athletic-NAIA Football National Championship is scheduled for Dec. 19 in Rome, Ga. Rome-Floyd County and Shorter (Ga.) College will host the event at Barron Stadium. Championship Series Quick Facts:

• Defending national champion Sioux Falls (S.D.) is playing for its fourth National Championship overall and third in the last four years. Texas A&I (now Texas A&M-Kingsville) holds the most NAIA Championships with seven.

• Carroll (Mont.) (10) holds the longest active streak of postseason appearances, followed by Sioux Falls (S.D.) (9).

• McPherson (Kan.) is making its first ever Championship Series appearance.

• The Heart of America Athletic (HAAC) Conference (Lindenwood, MidAmerica Nazarene, Missouri Valley) and Great Plains Athletic (GPAC) Conference (Hastings, Morningside, Sioux Falls) both qualify three participants each.

• Sioux Falls (S.D.) is riding a 25-game winning streak heading into the playoffs. Last year, Carroll (Mont.) was on a 26-game winning streak heading into the postseason.

• Without a bid this year, St. Francis (Ind.) snaps 10 straight years of appearing in the postseason. The Cougars lost three of their final four games this year.

• After securing the Frontier Conference Championship, Carroll (Mont.) now has won 10 straight (outright and shared) conference titles. The Fighting Saints own the nation’s longest active streak of conference championships.

• Six teams will enter the FCS with an undefeated record (Carroll, Lambuth, Lindenwood, Ottawa, St. Xavier, Sioux Falls). The amount is the most since six NAIA teams were undefeated during the regular season in 1995.

Sioux Falls (S.D.) (11-0)

Making ninth straight Football Championship Series appearance, which is second longest among active schools… Defending national champs and a three-time NAIA winner (2008, 2006 and 1996)… Recently won fourth straight Great Plains Athletic Conference Championship… Scored 40-plus points in 10 of 11 games – the only one below 40 was a 28-13 win over NCAA Division I North Dakota… Riding a 25-game winning streak overall with the last loss coming in the 2007 National Championship… Since the start of the 2008 season (in 25 games), Sioux Falls has surrendered just 20 touchdowns (13 passing, 7 rushing) -- just seven opponents have reached 10 or more points and USF has held two opponents to negative yardage in total offense… During this streak of 25 games, the Cougar offense has scored more points in the fourth quarter (185) than the opponent has scored total throughout the 25-game span (165)… The defense has not surrendered a 100-yard rusher during the streak of 25 games.
