• For the third-consecutive week, the Mid-South Conference is featured in the NAIA Football Game of the Week, as No. 7 Reinhardt (Ga.) puts its unbeaten record on the line at No. 17 Campbellsville (Ky.) in a key West Division showdown.
• Both clubs enter Saturday with unblemished records in conference play, however the Tigers (4-0) technically own a 0.5-game lead over Reinhardt (3-0) in the league standings. A win on Saturday for Campbellsville would give the Tigers their fourth all-time Mid-South Conference title (1992, 1997, 2014). A victory for the Eagles would allow the club to control their own destiny entering a Nov. 14 regular-season finale against Bethel (Tenn.).
• Campbellsville is hoping to make its fourth all-time appearance in the NAIA Football Championship Series this season with previous trips coming in 1992, 1997 and 2014. Reinhardt, which started varsity intercollegiate football in 2013, has never qualified for the event.
• Last Saturday, Campbellsville became the first road team to win in the NAIA Football Game of the Week this season, as it knocked off then-No. 8 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), 26-21.
• These two programs have met twice previously with both clubs winning on the road.
• Both teams are averaging 40 points per game in the series.
• Reinhardt, which prior to this season had never been ranked in the top 10 of the NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, showcases one of the NAIA’s best rushing attacks, leading the nation in rushing offense per game with a 362.8 average. Additionally, the Eagles are second in total offense per game (571.9), scoring offense per game (52.4) and first downs per game (27.8).
• Much of the Eagles success can be attributed to running backs Niagel Curtis and L.J. Stegall. Curtis is the team leader in rushing yards (697), attempts (119) and rushing touchdowns (17). He has scored at least once in every game this season, including a career-high five touchdowns on Oct. 24 against Lindsey Wilson. Curtis has run for more than 100 yards three times this year.
• Stegall is second in attempts (74) and rushing yards (572) for Reinhardt, and ranks third on the team in rushing touchdowns with four. His best performance came on Oct. 17 when he raced for 111 yards to help guide the Eagles past Cumberland (Tenn.).
• Quarterback Ryan Thompson has balanced the run perfectly this season for Reinhardt. The junior is completing 66.7 percent of his passes for 1,341 yards and nine touchdowns. Arguably more important has been his ability to protect the football, tossing only two interceptions in 129 attempts. Thompson was last picked on Sept. 19 against Georgetown (Ky.).
• Defensively, Reinhardt ranks No. 17 in scoring defense per game, allowing opponents an average of 20 points per contest, while surrendering an average of 390.1 yards of total offense.
• Linebacker Jacob Gross leads the team in tackles with 60 (27 solo) on the year, while defensive end Javier Dyer is the club’s top pass rusher with 10.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks through eight games.
• Campbellsville has won seven-straight entering the contest after losing back-to-back games to open the year.
• The Tigers are led by arguably the best quarterback in the NAIA this season – Jacob Russell. The Lawrenceburg, Ky., native leads the NAIA in passing yards per game (342.3), total passing (3,081), total offense (3,482) and total offense per game (386.9), while also ranking seventh in pass efficiency (162.6). Russell is the only NAIA quarterback to eclipse the 3,000-yard passing mark this season, reaching the plateau with a 339-yard effort last Saturday against Lindsey Wilson. He is completing 65.1 percent of his passes with 31 touchdowns and only six interceptions. In two seasons as the starter for Campbellsville, Russell has amassed 6,096 passing yards and 59 touchdowns, while only being picked 13 times in 761 attempts.
• Wide receiver Jarrod Harrington is Russell’s favorite target this season with 67 catches for 904 yards – both rank in the top five in the NAIA – and five touchdowns. He owns four games of 100-plus receiving yards with a season-high of 159 coming against Lindsey Wilson.
• Wide receiver Tyus Alcorn is also dangerous for Campbellsville. He’s second on the team in catches (42) and receiving yards (706), but is far and away the leader in touchdown receptions with 17 – 12 more than the next closest Tiger.
• Defensively, the Tigers boast a top-10 pass defense that is allowing only 166.4 yards through the air per game. However, similar to Reinhardt, Campbellsville is allowing more than 350 total yards per game on average.
• Defensive back Percy Minor is one of the keys on defense. He leads the team with four interceptions and is third with 64 tackles.
• Linebacker Bryson Bell is the team’s tackle leader with 72 (39 solo).
