2021 NAIA Football Championship Series - Semifinals Preview
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – [FCS Schedule] The march to the NAIA Football Championship Series Semifinals for the four remaining teams has been surgical since the beginning of the season. The four teams controlled the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll all season with Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) going wire-to-wire as the number one team in the country. Of the fourth, they own a record of 49-1 with the lone loss being dealt by one of their own. In less than 24 hours, the Championship matchup will be known for the 66th Annual Football National Championship which will be hosted at Durham County Memorial Stadium in Durham, N.C. No. 1 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) 12-0 vs. No. 3 Grand View (Iowa) 13-0
- Saturday’s game marks the third meeting between the two programs -- all coming in the NAIA FCS.
- The two teams split the first two meeting, each winning at home.
- Grand View won the first meeting in 2015, 16-13 and the Blue Raiders won in 2016 with a 34-27 overtime win.
- Lindsey Wilson is making its seventh appearance in the FCS.
- The Blue Raiders are 11-5 all-time in the FCS, including winning the 2020 national championship. LWC won six straight FCS games.
- Grand View is making its 10th appearance in the FCS, boasting an 11-8 all-time record, including winning the 2013 title.
- The Blue Raiders have not lost in the 2021 calendar year (23-0) after playing the 2020 season last spring.
- Both teams enter the semi-final match with untouched records this year, Grand View 13-0 and defending national champions, Lindsey Wilson at 12-0.
No. 2 Morningside (Iowa) 12-0 vs. No. 4 Northwestern (Iowa) 12-1
- The Mustangs are making their 10th overall and fifth straight semifinal round appearance on Saturday. Northwestern marks the program's 23rd appearance.
- This is the third time in the past six months, and for the second straight season these two teams have met in the semifinal round.
- Saturday's match-up is the second time this season they have played, with the Red Raiders only loss of the season coming from the Mustangs.
- Neither team are strangers in this type of environment, as both teams have two national titles in program history. Northwestern winning titles in 1973 and 1983, and Morningside winning back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019.
- Morningside is guided almost completely by their high-powered offense that puts up mind-boggling numbers each week. Led by senior quarterback Joe Dolincheck who eclipsed the 4,000-yard passing mark with 40 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.
- Anthony Sims leads the Mustang rushing attack with 1,474 yards on the ground on 195 carries, finding the endzone 29 times. Senior receiver Reid Jurgensmeier sits tied for first nationally with 85 receptions and fourth in receiving yards at 1,299. He has brought in 16 touchdowns.
- A prolific pass offense – ranked top-10 in the NAIA - guided the Raiders back to NAIA FCS appearances. The Raiders offense will still enter this weekend's clash with a top-5 scoring offense at No. 3 (46.8 points per game), and the seventh-best passing offense (305.5 passing yards per game)
- Last weekend, Cade Moser went off for 164 yards in Northwestern's victory over Marian - on only nine receptions.
