Alex Sherwood of Ave Maria (Fla.) Picks up Second National Defensive Player of the Week Honors for This Season
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Alex Sherwood of Ave Maria (Fla.) controlled the paint last week while adding nearly a dozen blocks over two games, earning his second Gared Performance Sports Systems NAIA Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week award.
Sherwood was locked in last week across two big SUN Conference games. Opening the week against Keiser (Fla.), which was an NAIA-UEN Featured game of the week, he collected nine defensive boards and a half dozen blocks, before a nail-biter against St. Thomas (Fla.), where he pulled down ten rebounds and had five blocks.
He has now tied or broken the school record for blocks in a game five different times this season. On the week, Sherwood played 74 minutes, grabbing 19 rebounds on the defensive end of the floor (25 total boards), four steals, and recording 11 total blocks.
Adding 11 more blocks to his season total last week, Sherwood now holds the single-season record in program history for blocks at 52. He passes the previous record of 44 set by Klajd Kiri back in 2022-23.
The Gyrenes step back on the court tomorrow evening against Southeastern (Fla.) for a 7:30 p.m. ET tipoff for an NAIA-UEN Featured Game of the Week.
