Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) Emerges Victorious Over Northwestern (Iowa) With Late Surge

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - [Bracket | Watch On-Demand | Box Score] Freed-Hardeman made a furious rally over the final eight minutes to pull out a 74-72 win over Northwestern Thursday night in a Round of 16 game at the 88th annual NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship at Municipal Auditorium.

Freed-Hardeman (32-1) - the No. 1 seed in the Naismith Quadrant and winners of 29 straight games - now faces either Georgetown (24-7) or Arizona Christian (24-7) in the quarterfinals Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT. Georgetown and Arizona Christian played their Round of 16 game on Thursday night.

Freed-Hardeman trailed 63-46 with 7:59 to go after Jesse Van Kalsbeek made a pair of free throws to give the Red Raiders (28-6) a decisive lead. However, the Lions went on a 16-3 run over a span of 4:31 to get back to within 66-63 with 3:28 remaining. Northwestern got a basket by Van Kalsbeek, but Freed-Hardeman scored the next five points to tie the game at 68 on a D.J. McIntyre basket with 2:14 to go.

The Red Raiders retook the lead twice - at 70-68 and 72-70 with 55 seconds left - but the Lions' Phil Horton got a three-point play with 46 seconds to go to put Freed-Hardeman ahead for good at 73-72. Northwestern missed a shot on its subsequent possession, Horton made a free throw at the other end to give the Lions a 74-72 lead, and Freed-Hardeman got one more defensive stop and ran out the clock to earn the hard-fought win and move on.

Northwestern - which saw a 15-game winning streak snapped with the loss - and Freed-Hardeman went back and forth for the first 12-plus minutes of the game before the Red Raiders pulled ahead with a 9-2 run to go up 29-22 with 4:22 left in the first half. Northwestern stretched its lead to 12 points - at 39-27 after a 3-pointer by Jalen Langsy with 1:55 to go before halftime, before the Lions went on an 8-2 run of their own to get to within 41-35. However, the Red Raiders scored the half's final point and took a 42-35 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Northwestern made 15 of its 24 shots (62.5 percent) in the first half, including going 5-for-9 (55.6 percent) from 3-point range. Langsy led the Red Raiders with 20 points on 6-of-7 shooting (3-of-4 on 3-pointers), and Van Kalsbeek had a double-double in the opening 20 minutes with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Freed-Hardeman went 11-for-33 (33.3 percent) from the field and 3-of-14 (21.4 percent) on 3-pointers in the first half. The Lions were led by Horton, who had 10 points and three rebounds. Five other players had at least four points for Freed-Hardeman, as the Lions showed a balanced offensive attack.

The Red Raiders continued to extend their lead in the second half, outscoring the Lions 21-12 in the first 12 minutes of the period, before Freed-Hardeman made its run to keep its season alive and move on to the quarterfinals.

Horton finished with 21 points and six rebounds to lead four double-digit scorers for the Lions. Lane Lauderbaugh had 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists, Rodney Henderson added 15 points and four rebounds, and McIntyre had 11 points, two rebounds and two steals.

Langsy had 25 points, four rebounds, and two assists, and Van Kalsbeek ended up with 25 points and 19 rebounds for the Red Raiders in the loss.
