The Lions of FHU Roar into Postseason Play at the Top of the Final Coaches' Poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - It's time for postseason action, and the Lions of Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) will do it as the top team in the nation behind a 24-game winning streak. The final NAIA Men's Basketball Coaches Top 25 Poll of the season continued to show movement, adding to the crazy year that has been men's basketball in the NAIA. The Lancers hold steady at No. 2 in the final poll while Oklahoma Wesleyan climbs two spots to No. 3. We have two bear sightings in the top 10 heading into the postseason as well, with the Pikeville (Ky.) Bears at No. 6 and the Rocky Mountain (Mont.) Battlin' Bears at No. 7. Only one team climbed into the top 25 with Northwestern (Iowa) after dropping out back on January 14.

1. Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.)

The Freed-Hardeman Lions have been on a mission for the last few weeks. Well, more like the previous four months, as they have not dropped a game since Nov. 5 in Waleska, Ga., against Life (Ga.), who was ranked No. 22 at the time. They have since rallied off 24 straight victories. To further understand how well the Lions have been playing as of late, this marks the first time FHU has gone undefeated in conference action.

The Lions have a quarterfinal bye in the MSC tournament and will play at the Studle Financial Arena in Bowling Green, Ky., on March 1 against the winner of the Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) vs. Campbellsville (Ky.) matchup.

2. Grace (Ind.)

The Lancers appear to be back on track after a few stumbles this season and enter postseason play at No. 2. Sitting at 25-3 overall and 15-3 in Crossroads League action, they earned the right to host CL tournament games at Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center beginning later this evening, Feb. 25.

3. Oklahoma Wesleyan

Oklahoma Wesleyan enters KCAC Tournament play on a five-game winning streak, sporting a 25-3 overall record and 20-2 in KCAC action. The Eagles will be the top seed in their conference tournament with a quarterfinal matchup against Avila (Mo.) in Bartlesville, Okla.

4. Indiana Wesleyan

IWU enters the postseason at No. 4 nationally with a 24-4 overall record and a 14-4 record in Crossroads League action. The Wildcats will be the second seed in CL tournament action, also hosting games as the higher seed in Luckey Arena. Indiana Wesleyan will face Saint Francis (Ind.) in a quarterfinal matchup later this evening, Feb. 25.

5. Nelson (Texas)

The Lions have been steadily climbing the Sooner Athletic Conference standings amid tough battles late in the season. After rolling through the month of February undefeated, it came down to the last regular-season game to decide the top seed in the SAC tournament, and Nelson saw the opportunity and took it after a thrilling and gritty 66-58 win against Langston (Okla.). Nelson will take on the Drovers of Science & Arts (Okla.) in Abe Lemons Arena in OKC later this evening, Feb. 25.

6. Pikeville (Ky.)

We mentioned in the sixth national poll release to watch out for the Bears of Pikeville (Ky.), and they are rolling into the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament as the top seed, sporting an eight-game winning streak and a 25-3 overall record. UPIKE will have an extra day of rest before taking the floor on Feb. 26 against the winner of Truett McConnell (Ga.) and Bryan (Tenn.).

7. Rocky Mountain (Mont.)

The Battlin' Bears certainly have been battling their way to the top of the Frontier Conference. Sporting a 25-3 overall record, RMU is on a 15-game winning streak that dates back to the top of the calendar year. As the top seed in the Frontier tournament, Rocky Mountain will take on the eighth-seeded Mayville State Comets in the Butte Civic Center in Butte, Mont., on Feb. 27.

8. Hope International (Calif.)

The Royals of HIU head into the postseason at 23-5 overall after going 13-3 in Great Southwest Athletic Conference play this season. Hope International will look to make a postseason run with three individuals who garnered all-conference honors: player of the year Nick Hopkins, freshman of the year Aman Haynes, and GSAC coach of the year Bill Czech. The Royals will take the court on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. PT in the GSAC Tournament against The Master's (Calif.)

9. Langston (Okla.)

After a gritty battle to end the regular season against current No. 5 Nelson (Texas), the Langston Lions are ready to right the ship. LU had not dropped back-to-back games all season long, and in each game after a loss, they have come out with a mission and taken care of the basketball to get back on track. The Lions will take the court in OKC at Abe Lemons Arena against the seventh-seeded John Brown (Ark.) later this evening at 5:30 p.m. CT.

10. Ave Maria (Fla.)

After an overtime slip to end the regular season action, the 24-4 Gyrenes are ready to get back in the win column at the SUN Conference tournament. AVE has not let back-to-back games slip away yet this season, and they will look to keep that trend in tack with a familiar foe on Feb. 27 in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Poll Methodology

  • The national poll is for publicity purposes only and does not influence the selection process for national championship consideration.
  • A panel of head coaches representing each conference and the Continental Athletic Conference (Independents) votes in the poll.
  • The Top 25 teams are selected using a points-based system:
    • 30 points for a 1st-place vote, 29 for 2nd, 28 for 3rd, and so on.
  • The highest and lowest rankings received by each team are discarded before final tallying.
  • Teams receiving only one point are not listed as “receiving votes.”
  • For the Preseason Poll, there is no "previous ranking" column since it is the initial poll and differs from the prior rating system.
