Men's Basketball Coaches' Active Wins List

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Head men’s basketball coach Dan Miles of Oregon Tech tops the active NAIA wins list entering the 2011-12 season, the national office announced Thursday. Miles, who is in his 41st season at the helm for the Owls, owns 937 career victories, a total that ranks second-highest among men’s coaches all-time at either the NAIA or NCAA levels. Only Harry Statham of McKendree (Ill.) has earned more coaching triumphs (1,043) at four-year collegiate institutions.

Miles, who sports a .713 winning percentage in more than 1,300 career games, ranks ahead of notable NCAA coaches such as Bob Knight (902) of Indiana, Mike Krzyzewski (900) of Duke (N.C.), Dean Smith (879) of North Carolina and Adolph Rupp (876) of Kentucky on the all-time wins list. Krzyzewski is the only active coach in that group.

Biola (Calif.) head coach Dave Holmquist leads all NAIA Division I men’s basketball coaches with 816 wins and is second behind Miles for the most among all active NAIA coaches. Holmquist has compiled a record of 816-300 for a .731 winning percentage in 34 seasons. Rounding out the top five of the men’s basketball wins list are Mid-America Christian’s (Okla.) Willie Holley (736), Taylor’s (Ind.) Paul Patterson (693) and Auburn Montgomery’s (Ala.) Larry Chapman (685).

Four other active coaches have at least 600 career wins: Dan Hays (662) of Oklahoma Christian, Ralph Hodge (652) of Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), Mike Lightfoot (643) of Bethel (Ind.) and Jim Kessler (631) of Grace (Ind.).
