Oklahoma Christian Wins National Championship

SILVIS, Ill. - (Results) Oklahoma Christian captured the 2011 NAIA Men's Golf National Championship to win its second title in three years Friday at TPC Deere Run. The Eagles led the entire event, finishing with a 281-293-283-293--1150. Oklahoma Christian senior Oscar Stark became the program's first individual to capture national medalist honors.

British Columbia closed the gap slightly with a Final Round 291, but still finished in a distant second with a 293-295-293-291--1172. The rest of the top-five teams were tightly bunched as South Carolina - Beaufort was third with an 294-291-295-301--1181, Malone (Ohio) took fourth with a 293-302-300-287--1182 and Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) finished fifth with an 289-314-293-287--1183.

Stark led wire-to-wire after opening the four-round tournament with a 4-under-par 67. He followed with back-to-back rounds of 1-under-par 70 before closing out with a 2-over-par 73. He was the only player in the field to finish under par at 4-under-par 280.

Stark's Oklahoma Christian teammate Axel Ochoa closed with an even 71 to finish second overall with a 1-over-par 285. Defending national medalist Justin Lower of Malone (Ohio) fired a 2-under-par 69 to end in third with a 286.

David Sheman of British Columbia made a charge early in the Final Round, shooting a 5-under-par 30 on the front nine to get to within four shots of Stark at the turn. He faded on the back side and settled with a 73 to tie for fourth with Michael Loppnow of Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 287.

Chris Winkel of Grand View (Iowa) was named the 2011 NAIA Men's Golf Coach of the Year. The top-15 individuals were named to the All-Tournament Team.
