KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Defending national champion Oklahoma Christian has been pegged No. 1 for the second-straight poll and for the fifth time in the past six rankings. The Eagles collected 14 first-place votes and 435 total points in the first regular-season edition of the NAIA Men’s Golf Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Friday. Oklahoma City remains No. 1 despite having its three-meet win streak snapped by then-No. 3 Oklahoma City in a one-hole playoff at the UST Mamiya TX Intercollegiate March 11 – 12.
That performance allowed Oklahoma City to leapfrog Grand View (Iowa) and land at No. 2 with 417 points. Grand View fell to No. 3 with 404 points and took the remaining two first-place nods. Texas Wesleyan comes in at No. 4, returning to the top five for the first time since Feb. 29, 2008, after garnering 386 points. Northwood (Fla.) fell one position to No. 5 with 383 points.
Southern Nazarene (Okla.) made the biggest splash in the new poll, going from the receiving votes category in the preseason to No. 10 this week. The Crimson Storm’s Blake Jackson took medalist honors at the UST Mamiya TX Intercollegiate as he shot a 69-69 –138. As a team, Southern Nazarene finished in third place, four strokes behind both Oklahoma Christian and Oklahoma City.
The largest drop among teams ranked this week was five positions. Rogers State (Okla.), ranked No. 18 in the preseason is down to 23rd.
Four teams are new to this week’s poll: Southern Nazarene, No. 18 Webber International (Fla.), No. 19 Victoria (B.C.) and No. 25 Shorter (Ga.). The quartet replaces St. Thomas (Fla.) (No. 15), Houston-Victoria (Texas) (No. 19), Northwood (Texas) (No. 24) and Holy Names (Calif.) (No. 25), who all dropped out.
Eleven conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups are represented in the Top 25. The Sun Conference and the Sooner Athletic Conference are tied for the most representation within the poll with five members.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences, independents and unaffiliated groups. The next Top 25 poll will be announced on March 20.
