2022 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship Day One Recap

Silvis, Ill. – [Full Leader Board] Perfect weather gave a picturesque backdrop for the first day of the 70th Annual NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship. Twenty nine teams and 155 individuals hit the links at TPC Deere Run in a morning and afternoon wave with half starting on holes one and 10 during each. 

Day two is set to begin early on Wednesday morning with a 7:00 a.m. CT start on Hole 10 and a 7:20 a.m. CT start on Hole 1. The day will conclude with a cut down to 17 teams and 40 individuals, including ties.

Leaving the course, Keiser (Fla.) and Point (Ga.) held a tie for the top of the standings with a 4-under 280 team score. Wayland Baptist (Texas) was behind by one shot, British Columbia was fourth with a one-under 283. Victoria (B.C.) and Houston-Victoria are tied for fifth place.  

Highlights

  • Soft course conditions led to 22 of 29 teams shooting 300 or below.
  • Round One course average was 73.85; 34 players recorded scores of EVEN or below.
  • A total of seven eagles, 438 birdies, 1,600 pars, 626 bogeys, and 96 double-bogeys were carded. 
  • Holes 16 and 17 saw the entire field average under par (-0.14 and -0.36).
  • The top of the leader board is much different than the final NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll rankings. Only Keiser (first), British Columbia (sixth) and Houston-Victoria (10th) are showing in the Top Five after day one. 
  • Point (Ga.) leaped from 11th entering the week to T1; Victoria (B.C.) received 59 votes in the latest poll, but was not represented in the Top 25. 
  • John Houk of Tennessee Wesleyan posted the lowest round one score for an individual qualifier - a four-under 64 which places him T7. Logan Smith and Claes Borregaard were tied for second place amongst individual at T18.

After the second round, the cut will be made and the Round 3 Pairings will be established. The cut will be the Top 17 teams and Top 40 individuals including ties for both. If Individuals are in the Top 40 and on a team in the Top 17, they will be removed from the individual competition. The removed individuals will not be backfilled.
