March 29, 2010

PITTSBURGH – Former Point Park University goalkeeper Steve Fabian was signed by the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, a professional soccer team in the United Soccer League Second Division, this week.

Fabian, a native of Milton, Del., completed his career as a four-year starter at Point Park after the 2008 season. After graduating from Point Park the following spring, Fabian spent the summer of 2009 as the starting goalie for the New Orleans Jesters of the Premier Development League, which is known as the PDL.

Fabian is slated to be a backup goaltender for the Riverhounds, who begin their season April 17 on the road against the Real Maryland Monarchs “This is a big achievement, and it has been a goal of mine that last two years,” said Fabian of joining the Riverhounds. “I am still very young in my soccer career, and I have a lot to learn, but this is a great step for me.

“I could not have seen myself in this position two years ago, but I have put in a lot of hard work both at Point Park and with New Orleans of the PDL. I have learned so much about soccer and life the last few years, and I am really enjoying it.”

Jeroen Walstra, the head men’s soccer coach at Point Park the last three years, also serves an assistant coach with the Riverhounds. Walstra’s main responsibility with the pro club is to coach the goalkeepers.

“Steve had a great career at Point Park, and it is great for our program and the American Mideast Conference to have him move on in his career,” said Walstra. “There are a lot of talented players at our level, but very get to be professionals.”

While at Point Park, Fabian was a four-year starter and a three-time All-AMC honorable mention selection. He led the AMC in saves each of his last two years, and he ranked second in the NAIA in saves as a senior with 161.

After leaving Point Park, Fabian started every game for New Orleans of the PDL last summer. In 17 games, Fabian was unbeaten in the regular season and had a record of 5-1-11. The lone loss came in the first round of the playoffs.

Fabian’s statistics with the Jesters included 64 saves, 13 goals against and a goals-against average of .812.

Fabian is a graduate of Cape Henlopen High School in Delaware, and he played club soccer for the Indian River Rush in Maryland.
