Cumberlands Survives Defensive Battle, Prevails to Semifinals After Penalty Kick Shootout

ORANGE BEACH, ALA. - Cumberlands (Ky.) advanced to the semifinals of the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship on a rainy afternoon in Orange Beach, edging Warner Pacific in a 4-1 penalty shootout after 110 hard-fought, scoreless minutes.

The Patriots controlled much of the attacking rhythm throughout the match, outshooting Warner Pacific 13-2 and generating a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Cumberlands posted an 8-2 shot margin in the first half alone, forcing Warner Pacific's goalkeeper Owen Purvis into multiple saves to keep the Knights level.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Cumberlands adding three more shots while limiting Warner Pacific to none. The Patriots pushed forward again in overtime, recording two shots and an additional corner, but Purvis continued to stand tall, finishing with five saves across the match. On the other end, Cumberlands' goalkeeper Javiero Izquierdo needed just two stops across 110 minutes as Warner Pacific managed no shots after the opening period.

Neither side found a breakthrough on the offensive end in either overtime session, sending the match to penalties. Cumberlands delivered the composure it needed, converting four attempts while Warner Pacific managed one, securing the Patriots’ spot in the semifinals.

Cumberlands (Ky.) is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 1 p.m. against Grand View (Iowa).
