Early Strike, Second-Half Finish Propels MidAmerica Nazarene to 3-1 Edge Over John Brown
ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) punched its ticket to the quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon with a composed 3-1 triumph over John Brown (Ark.) at the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship in Orange Beach. The Pioneers struck shockingly early, wasting no time as Elyes Ellouz capitalized less than a minute into the match to put MNU on the board. John Brown responded well to the early stun, finding the equalizer in the fifth minute when Jorge Cervantes finished a feed from Kendal Madrigal to pull the Golden Eagles level.
The momentum shifted again midway through the opening half. A John Brown own goal in the 18th minute handed the lead back to MNU (2-0) and set the tone for the remainder of the match. Despite JBU generating eight corner kicks and maintaining steady pressure in the attack with five shots, the Pioneers remained disciplined and efficient with their chances later in the contest.
MidAmerica Nazarene tallied six shots on the day, three of them on frame.
The Pioneers created the breathing room it needed in the 64th minute when Ellouz struck for the second time, finishing a well-built sequence from Gil Brown and Antonio Mugica to extend the lead to 3-1.
From there, the Pioneers controlled the pace, leaning on compact defending and timely clearances to keep John Brown at bay. JBU managed just two shots on target for the game, and MNU keeper Tobias Stirl turned away the only attempt that threatened him in the second half.
MidAmerica Nazarene will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 4 p.m. against William Penn (Iowa).
