Georgia Gwinnett’s Villarruel’s Unbeaten Week Earns Season’s Final National Honor
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Santiago Villarruel of Georgia Gwinnett has been named the NAIA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after posting an unbeaten performance against nationally recognized competition.
The senior compiled a perfect 5-0 record across singles and doubles play, competing in three matches against teams featured in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll. Villarruel delivered key results throughout the week, including a straight-sets victory over No. 50 Nour Ibrahim of No. 12 Dillard (La.) at No. 2 singles.
In addition to his singles success, Villarruel contributed on the doubles court as part of the nation’s top-ranked pairing. He secured wins on the No. 1 line against receiving votes Cumberland (Tenn.) and No. 12 Dillard, helping Georgia Gwinnett maintain its strong form in high-level matchups.
Villarruel also picked up singles victories over Cumberland and Tennessee Southern. His efforts helped fuel a trio of team wins, as the Grizzlies extended their unbeaten record to 18-0 on the season.
Georgia Gwinnett returns to action on April 14 against Bethel (Tenn.) as it looks to continue its momentum leading up to the postseason.
