Three Field Events Crowned Champions on Day One of the NAIA Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The opening day of the 2026 NAIA Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship saw three individual champions crowned and several preliminaries took place.
Decathlon
Through the first five events of the decathlon (100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 meters), Carson Krack of Carroll (Mont.) has opened a strong lead with 3,942 points, highlighted by a sharp 10.97 in the 100 and the best 400-meter time of the group at 48.51 to close the session. Carter Giittinger of Friends (Kan.) sits second on 3,721 points, 221 back, staying steady across the board with solid jumps and a 49.51 in the 400. The battle for third is tight, with Tucker Monaco of Carroll (Mont.) (3,718) just three points behind Giittinger after pairing a 1.97 high jump with a 49.48 400, while Braxton Baker of Evangel (Mo.) is close in fourth at 3,711. Seth Massie of Cumberlands (Ky.) rounds out the top five at 3,686, keeping himself in contention with a big 7.02 long jump even as the standings begin to stretch heading into day two.
Hammer
The hammer throw featured a tight battle at the top, led by Cornerstone (Mich.) senior Ryan Shinabery, who won with a mark of 60.43m (198-03) to score 10 points. Close behind, Dickinson State (N.D.) senior Dylan Dahlgren took second at 60.37m (198-00) for 8 points, while Dakota State (S.D.) senior Zachary Haugen placed third with a personal-best 59.52m (195-03), adding 6 points. Indiana Tech junior Jacob Kavicky (59.08m) and Eastern Oregon senior Mark Church (59.03m) also posted personal bests to finish fourth and fifth, with Saint Xavier (Ill.) junior Connor Whalen right behind in sixth at 58.91m (also a PB). William Penn (Iowa) senior Xzavion West (58.74m) and IU Kokomo (Ind.) senior Gabriel Wedmore (58.25m) rounded out the scoring in seventh and eighth, respectively, to round out the All-Americans.
Javelin
The javelin competition was led by Benedictine (Kan.) sophomore Joe Loughman, who claimed the win with a throw of 66.59m (218-05) to earn 10 team points. Carroll (Mont.) senior Reuben Hornby followed in second at 64.19m (210-07) for eight points, while Tabor (Kan.) freshman Koltyn Kaniper took third with 63.99m (209-11) to add six. Evangel (Mo.) senior Alex Richardson placed fourth at 63.21m (207-04), and Concordia (Neb.) freshman Emry Gutz rounded out the top five with 61.95m (203-03). Keiser (Fla.) sophomore Claudio Pugnetti (61.14m/200-07), Lewis-Clark (Idaho) junior Perry Severijnse (60.94m/199-11), and British Columbia senior Jordan Dickhof (60.90m/199-09) completed the scoring positions.
High Jump
The men’s high jump competition was highlighted by a tied mark at the top, as Keondre Glover of Life (Ga.) and freshman Isaac Burns of Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) both cleared 2.15m (7-00.50), with Glover landing the title after making it through his first five jumps clean on the first attempts. Bradley Richards of Cornerstone (Mich.) and Deandre Jones of Voorhees (S.C.) each cleared 2.06m (6-09.00), with Richards matching his personal best. A large pack followed at 2.03m (6-08.00), including Gunner Kovach of Marian (Ind.), Bryan McClendon of Reinhardt (Ga.), Philip Drake of Bryan (Tenn.), Daniel Blount of Ottawa (Kan.), Hollis Morton of Brewton-Parker (Ga.), Janer Caicedo Campaz of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), and Julian Holt of Rochester Christian (Ohio), along with Mckale Hood of Indiana Tech and Dyse Harding of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), several of whom posted season or personal bests.
The day was broken apart by lightning delays, which forced the steeplechase prelims and the 10,000-meter run to May 21 (CLICK HERE for schedule updates).
