Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship Outlasts Storms to Crown Six Champions on Day Two
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Day two of the NAIA Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship concluded with six more national champions as the anticipation builds into the final day of the meet.
Decathlon
The men’s decathlon showcased consistency and versatility across two demanding days of competition, with Carson Krack of Carroll (Mont.) emerging as the overall champion with 7,522 points. Krack set the tone early with strong performances in the 100m, high jump, 400m, and 110m hurdles, then sealed the win with a solid 1,500m on the final event. Teammate Tucker Monaco completed a strong showing for Carroll by finishing second with 7,167 points, highlighted by an excellent pole vault clearance of 4.85m and a meet-best 1,500m time. Carter Giittinger of Friends (Kan.) rounded out the podium with 7,030 points, demonstrating balance across the throws and hurdles. Tysen Grinde of Dakota State (S.D.) and Mark Lawin of Cumberlands (Ky.) followed closely in fourth and fifth, respectively, with several athletes posting event wins and personal-best efforts throughout the competition.
Long Jump
The men’s long jump competition delivered an exciting finish, as Elijah Smith of St. Thomas (Fla.) edged the field with a winning leap of 7.69m (25-02.75). Right behind him was Jaylen Burris of Voorhees (S.C.), who jumped 7.68m, missing the top spot by just one centimeter in one of the closest finishes of the meet. Braden Kalvelage of Northwestern (Iowa) secured third place with a strong 7.53m effort, while Maxwell Wordui of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) and Damien Keys of Indiana Tech rounded out the top five, both surpassing 7.40m. Seven athletes cleared at least 7.30m, including Indiana Tech’s Ryan Dube, who set a personal best of 7.42m.
Shot Put
The men’s shot put competition was highlighted by Lamar Gordon of McPherson (Kan.), who claimed the title with a throw of 18.31m (60-01.00) and is the only person to land a mark over 18m this season. Cameron Montgomery of Columbia International (S.C.) secured second place with 17.20m, while Jerahmia Smith of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) finished third at 16.95m in a tightly contested battle for the podium. Freshman Marcus Robinson of Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) impressed with a fourth-place finish at 16.93m, just ahead of Darius Barge of Life (Ga.), who threw 16.86m for fifth. Eight athletes exceeded 16.60m, including Olivet Nazarene’s Okenoko Pascall and Doane’s (Neb.) Cale Bessler, as well as Dylan Simms of Truett-McConnell (Ga.).
Racewalk
The men’s racewalk featured a strong showing from Cumberlands (Ky.), led by Lucien Beardsley, who captured the title with a winning time of 20:36.79 after maintaining a steady and controlled pace throughout the race. Lowell Solmes of British Columbia followed closely in second, finishing in 20:43.58, while Beardsley’s teammate Tomas Mencel placed third in 21:11.13, recording a personal best. Cameron Nocton of IU East (Ind.) and Angel Montes of Rio Grande (Ohio) rounded out the top five, both finishing under 21:30. Multiple athletes broke the 22-minute barrier, including Jonny Jurchen of Concordia (Neb.) and Dillan Melchiore of Cumberlands.
4x800 Relay
The men’s 4x800 relay delivered an exciting and tightly contested race, with Marian (Ind.) claiming the victory in a season-best time of 7:28.01 behind the efforts of M. Piatt, B. Riehle, C. Leedke, and T. Trevino. Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) pushed Marian to the line and finished a close second in 7:28.79. Indiana Tech secured third place in 7:31.89, followed closely by Dakota State (S.D.) in 7:32.13 and Rio Grande (Ohio) in 7:32.66, as the top six teams all finished under 7:33. Cumberlands (Ky.) placed sixth with a season-best 7:32.94, while Dordt (Iowa) and St. Ambrose (Iowa) rounded out the scoring.
10,000m Run
The men’s 10,000m run was controlled from the early stages by Luca Madeo of Cumberlands (Ky.), who ran a composed and evenly paced race to claim the victory in 29:50.28. Madeo steadily separated himself from the field through the middle laps and closed strongly to secure the win by more than 18 seconds. Ryan Stade of Montreat (N.C.) finished second in 30:08.74, holding off a tight battle for the remaining podium spots, while Jack Gladfelter of Corban (Ore.) placed third in 30:19.86 after maintaining consistent splits throughout. Tyler Jenkins of Rio Grande (Ohio) and Mason Weisgerber of Southern Oregon rounded out the top five, both finishing under 30:35.
The meet will conclude on Friday, May 23. The meet will open the day at 9 a.m. ET with the discus and the pole vault.
