No. 1 Martin Methodist (Tenn.) Prevails Over No. 4 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.)
Sept. 20, 2008
PULASKI, Tenn. -– In a battled of undefeated women’s soccer teams, Nicole O’Donnell scored the winning goal for Martin Methodist (Tenn.) with 18 seconds left in the game lifting the No. 1 RedHawks over the No. 4 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) Blue Raiders 1-0 on Friday (Sept. 19).
Martin Methodist goal keeper Hanit Schwarz cleared the ball over the half line and O’Donnell was waiting. With a few dribbles she lobbed a shot from over 40 yards out for a spectacular game winner.
In the last four years the NAIA National Title has been won by either Martin Methodist or Lindsey Wilson, each has two NAIA National Titles under their belts. Tonight’s game was more like a national tournament game, as both teams played a very defensive game. Neither team was able to get many shots off. Lindsey Wilson had four shots to the Martin Methodist’s eight.
“I was not happy with the possession Lindsey had on our field” commented Coach Gerry Cleary, “It was a game that was going to be won by a ref’s call or a flash of brilliance and Nikki’s goal flash of brilliance.”
The RedHawks remain undefeated moving to 6-0 on the season, while the Blue Raiders fall to 5-1. The RedHawks will host conference rival Bethel College on September 26th at 6:00.
