The Eagles of OKWU Soar into the Semifinals After Defeating Top-Seeded Marian (Ind.)
PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Eagles of Oklahoma Wesleyan (21-1-2) are headed to the NAIA Women's Soccer Semifinals after a 1-0 victory over top-seeded Marian (Ind.) (20-1-2). The Game was deadlocked at 0-0 through 72 minutes of play as the rain began to fall.
The lone goal of the match came in the 72nd minute when Oklahoma Wesleyan's Isabelle Simoneau capitalized on a well-placed assist from Ana Chavez. Simoneau's looping header from 12 yards out found the back of the net, after sneaking below the crossbar and just out of the stretched reach of the Knights' goalkeeper, marking her 10th goal of the season and sealing the win for the Eagles.
Marian put up a fight, though, outshooting OKWU 13-9. However, Oklahoma Wesleyan's goalkeeper, Alessandra Martinez, was locked in for a full 90 minutes, saving all seven shots on target from Marian, maintaining a clean sheet, and securing her ninth win of the season.
Both teams had equal opportunities from corner kicks, each earning three throughout the match, but neither could capitalize on these set pieces.
OKWU extends its stay in Pensacola for two more days as it heads to the national semifinals and awaits its opponent, who will be the winner of the upcoming match between Cumberlands (Ky.) and John Brown (Ark.)
