Concordia and Texas at Brownsville Win in Pool D

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Fourth-seeded Concordia (Calif.) and ninth-seeded Texas at Brownsville were victorious in Pool D Wednesday in the second day of pool play action at the NAIA Volleyball National Championship Presented by Siouxland Sports Medicine Foundation in the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena.

Brooke Marino had 18 kills and Amber Ridens slammed down 17 kills, as Concordia blanked Bellevue (Neb.), 25-22, 25-19, 25-19, to move to 2-0 in pool play. The Eagles had 51 kills and committed only 15 hitting errors to finish the match with a .333 clip. Renee Horton and Vanessa Perry teamed together to conduct the offense, handing out 23 and 22 assists, respectively. Chelsea Scott turned in a 15-dig showing to lead the defense. Bellevue hit only .106 in the loss and Rachel Muller led the Bruins with eight kills. The Bruins are 0-2.

Behind the charge of Arlene Ferreira, Texas at Brownsville knocked off Morningside (Iowa) in straight sets, 25-20, 26-24, 25-20, to improve to 2-0 in Pool D. Ferreira slammed down 15 kills on 32 swings, hitting .406. Daianarah Bracero fed the offense with 36 assists. A trio of Scorpions held off the Mustang attack, led by Ferreira with 14 digs and Rafaella Dornelas and Erica Chimak each finished with 10 digs. Jamie Vander Kooi had 12 kills for the Mustangs in the loss, which drops Morningside to 0-2 in the pool.

Thursday's schedule will see Concordia collide with Texas at Brownsville at 5:45 p.m., followed by an 8 p.m. match between Morningside and Bellevue.
