Dec. 4, 2009
SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Seventh-seeded Georgetown (Ky.) defeated 10th-seeded Point Loma Nazarene in straight sets, 25-21, 26-24, 27-27, Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Volleyball National Championship Presented by Siouxland Sports Medicine Foundation in the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena.
The Tigers improve to 43-3 on the season and will face second-seeded California Baptist (29-5) at 8 p.m. Friday. The match will be video-streamed at www.watchnaia.com and live stats will be available here. Point Loma Nazarene’s season comes to a close with a record of 22-13.
Georgetown took control of the first set and warded off late surges by the Sea Lions in the second and third sets to advance to its second-straight quarterfinal appearance. Cassie Moore had 13 kills for the Tigers on 32 attempts, as Georgetown hit .211 in the match. Chipping in nine kills was Erica Janszen. Amanda Philpot recorded a triple-double with 33 assists and 20 digs. The defensive leader was Amy Barmore with 22 digs.
Even though the Sea Lions had a pair of players finish with double-figure kills, a .183 hitting percentage, 17 hitting errors and 11 service aces left little room for error. Tabitha Henken pounded down 21 kills and Alyssa Pitkin added 10 of her own. Kylie Morel and Natalie Hamill teamed together to feed the offense with 19 and 18 assists, respectively. Nicole Eiler finished with 25 digs in the match.
