2020 NAIA Women’s Volleyball Opening Round Recap

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – [Results] Twenty-four of the 48 teams that competed in the NAIA Women’s Volleyball National Championship Opening Round won their match on Saturday at campus sites around the country and advance to the final site in Sioux City, Iowa on April 27.

  • This is the first year that all qualifying teams must play in opening round matches.
  • There were three visiting teams that won their matches: Bethel (Ind.), Concordia (Neb.) and Lindsey Wilson (Ky.)
  • Eighteen matches were won in three sets, four matches were won in four sets and two matches were won in five sets.
  • Opening Round Quick Leaders:
    • Aces – Taylor Meyer, Northwestern (Iowa), 5 aces
    • Kills – Marci Miller, Indiana Wesleyan, 15 total/5 per set
    • Assists - Olivia Zawadski, Indiana Wesleyan,  42 total/14 per set
    • Digs – Macee Rudy, IU Kokomo (Ind.), 26 total/8.7 per set
    • Blocks – Taylor Carey, Grand View (Iowa), 10 total/2.5 per set
  • In their first year as a qualifier, Keiser (Fla.) advances to the final site after a 3-0 win over Mobile (Ala.). The Seahawks are the only team in the tournament field advancing to the final site in their first appearance.
  • Ottawa (Kan.) advances to the final site for the fifth time with a 3-1 win over William Woods (Mo.). The Braves have competed in seven opening rounds and hold an opening round record of 5-2.
  • Bellevue (Neb.) advances to the final site for the ninth time with a 3-2 win over Texas Wesleyan. The Bruins currently hold a 7-3 opening round record.
  • In their second opening round appearance, Westmont (Calif.) advances to the final site with a 3-0 win over Benedictine Mesa (Ariz.). In all of the teams' 14 appearances, the Warriors have played at the final site.
  • Of the 15 tournament appearances, this is only the fifth time that Dordt (Iowa) has played in an opening round and has won four of the five.
  • Eastern Oregon is now 2-0 in opening round appearances with a win over UC Merced (Calif.)
  • Indiana Wesleyan has won five of the teams six opening round appearances.
  • Eleven teams captured their third opening round win: Central Methodist (Mo.), Corban (Ore.), Grand View (Iowa), IU Kokomo (Ind.),  Jamestown (N.D.), Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), Marian (Ind.), Missouri Baptist, Oklahoma City, Rocky Mountain (Mont.) and Westmont (Calif.)
  • Oklahoma City won its third of four opening round match appearances. The Stars had the opportunity to even the score against Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) as the team’s only opening round loss was to Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) in 2017.
  • This is the first time that Park (Mo.) and Viterbo (Wis.) have played in an opening round since the teams first appearance in the national championship in 2013 and 2012 respectively. The teams are 2-0 in opening round match-ups.
  • Five teams advance to the final site after their first opening round appearance: Bethel (Ind.), Concordia (Neb.), Keiser (Fla.), Midland (Neb.), Northwestern (Iowa) and Providence (Mont.).
  • The pool play placements and schedule will be announced on Sunday, April 18, by 5 p.m. central.
