KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Sandy Jenkins of Ave Maria (Fla.) has been named the final NAIA National Division II Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the 2011-12 season, the national office announced Tuesday. Jenkins was selected based on her performances from Feb. 13 – 19 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.

Jenkins, a 6-foot senior forward, led the Gyrenes to their first The Sun Conference regular-season championship with wins against Southeastern (Fla.), 72-67, on Feb. 14 and against Florida Memorial, 72-50, on Feb. 17, before upsetting then-No. 14 St. Thomas (Fla.), 72-51, on Feb. 18. In Ave Maria’s 72-67 victory over Southeastern, she recorded her 15th double-double of the season with 18 points and a career-high tying 20 rebounds, while also becoming the second player in program history to reach 1,000 points. Two games later against St. Thomas, Jenkins added another milestone to the week, scoring a career-best 25 points on a 9-for-14 effort from the field and perfect 7-of-7 mark at the charity stripe.

For the week, she averaged 17.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 3.0 steals, while shooting 52.4 percent (22-of-42) from the field.

Jenkins is one of nine players averaging a double-double this season with 15.3 points and 10.7 boards per game. One of the NAIA’s best rebounders, she ranks second nationally in offensive rebounds per game (4.7), fifth in total rebounds (299) and seventh in rebounds per game (10.7).
