Jamestown Marches on to Quarterfinals with Five-point triumph

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - (Box Score) The Jimmies of Jamestown (N.D.) made it three-consecutive upsets to begin the second round of action at the 2015 NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship, presented by State Farm, by holding off No. 2 Cardinal Stritch (Wis.), 58-53, to survive and advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow afternoon.

A back-and-forth affair took place in the first 20 minutes, as both teams traded punches on the way to five lead changes and two tie scores in the first half.

After beginning the second half on a 5-0 run to stretch their lead to 29-22, little did the Wolves know the Jimmies were about to go 17-0 run of their own to seize control of the game 39-29 with 12:19 remaining in the game. Poor shooting a stifling defense spelled problems for Cardinal Stritch, as the team failed to score a point in over a five minute stretch until Maranda Huibregtse hit a three-pointer at the 11:59 mark.

Twelve seconds later, Jamestown’s Chelsey Frydenlund took back the momentum by hitting a long ball of her own. The Jimmies’ lead got as high as 12 with 11:23 remaining, but the Wolves would not go quietly.

The two teams mirrored each other by going on mini-runs against one another. Just like that, the Jamestown lead was down to 49-47 with just over five minutes left.

Cardinal Stritch – the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament champion – could not get any closer as it watch the Jimmies hit crucial free throws to put the game away.

Both Mika Passini (11 points) and Huibregtse (10 points) led the way in defeat. With the loss, the Wolves’ title run comes to a close at 28-5.

Jessica Buck netted 16 and Kyra Dewald had 14, helping lead their team into Saturday’s quarterfinals for the first time in team history (seven appearances).

The Jimmies await either top-seeded Concordia (Neb.) or College of Saint Mary (Neb.) tomorrow at 1:45 p.m. CDT.
