1. How can I access the Champions of Character Core Report?

• NAIA Athletics Directors, their designee, or the Campus Character Liaison can access the Core Report in NAIA Connect. Enter your email address and password, then click on the Core Report menu. Please note: Athletics Directors should ensure their designee or the Campus Character Liaison has access to NAIA Connect in order for them to update the Core Report.

2. Is the Core Report for the academic year or calendar year?

• Core Reports cover the academic year.

3. Can first year NAIA member institutions or Associate NAIA member institutions participate in the Champions of Character Core Report and Five-Start recognition program?

• Yes, first year NAIA member institutions can complete a Core Report and participate in the Five-Star Institution program.

4. Who keeps track and completes the Core Report?

• The Core Report can be completed by an NAIA Athletics Director, their designee or the Campus Character Liaison.

5. How often should the Core Report be updated?

• The Core Report can be updated with information throughout the year.

6. What ejections count against the Core Report?

• Ejections for fighting, disrespect/dissent to officials, and/or profanity are counted against the Core Report. Points may also be deducted for institutions on probation or suspension status.
• The total number of ejections allowed is 5. The total number is for an entire athletic program, not per team.

7. Under section D (Servant Leadership) who should be included in “Total # of Participants” section?

• Total number of participants should include all members of the athletic community who participated in that event (i.e. # of student-athletes, coaches, and administrators).

8. How can my institution or conference be recognized as a Champions of Character Five -Star Institution or Conference?

• Institutions that score at least 60 out of 100 possible points will be recognized as Champions of Character Five-Star Institution. Conferences with at least 60% of their members earning Five-Star recognition will be designated Champions of Character Five-Star Conference.

9. What are the options for Teachable Moments?

• Essay, 100-250 words.
• Research on the origin of derogatory language used and summary of research findings and what they have personally learned from the research.
• Verbal commitment to the team and written communication to the president, and/or the conference commissioner to demonstrate good sportsmanship, integrity, and responsibility.
• Written apology to an official if ejection was for dissent or disrespect to game official. A written apology will be submitted as a Teachable Moment and sent to conference commissioner to disseminate to the game day official or the assigner.
• Speak to an outside group (youth group, youth club, local school aged students) about the importance of the Five Core Values. Write a summary of the experience, your talking points and provide any supporting documentation.

10. If a coach is ejected for fighting, disrespect/dissent to officials, and/or profanity are they also required to complete a Teachable Moment?

• Yes, coaches are required to submit a Teachable Moment.

11. Is there a deadline for the Core Report?

• The Core Report is due June 15th each year.

12. What are the tiers for recognition?

• Five-Star Gold level Institution (90-100 points)
• Five-Star Silver level Institution (75-89 points)
• Five-Star Bronze level Institution (60-74 points)

1. What is a Teachable Moment?

• A teachable moment is an opportunity for student-athletes and staff members to reflect on the conduct that lead to their ejection.

2. Why do I need to submit a Teachable Moment?

• Teachable moments allow an institution to earn back points on the Core Report for ejections received throughout the year.
• Teachable moments are completed for every ejection received for FIGHTING, DISRESPECT/DISSENT to OFFICIALS, and/or PROFANITY (i.e. racial slurs, derogatory language).

3. How are ejections and Teachable Moments calculated?

• Automatic 20 points for zero ejections.
• 0 points for 1 to 5 ejections, with the opportunity to earn back 20 points.
• This is an all or nothing opportunity. If you have 3 ejections, you must complete a Teachable Moment form for each ejection. If you have 4 ejections and only do 3 Teachable moments, it’s still 0 points because the institutions did not complete all the required Teachable Moments.
• More than 5 ejections result in an automatic 0 points with no chance of recovery.
