Gianna Bennett became the leading female scorer in college football history in last week's 45-17 win over Doane (Neb.).
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Northwestern (Iowa) sophomore kicker Gianna Bennett booted a 34-yard field goal at the end of the first quarter in the Raiders’ 45-17 win last Saturday over Doane (Neb.), etching her place in college football history as the game’s all-time leading female scorer.
Monday, she was named PrestoSports NAIA Special Teams Player of the Week.
She helped Northwestern get to 6-2 (6-1 in the GPAC), as her field goal with three seconds left in the opening quarter put the Raiders on top 17-0. Prior to that kick, Bennett made PATs on touchdowns less than three minutes apart, adding four more PATs in the game to go a perfect 6-for-6 on points after touchdowns, 7-for-7 on kicks for the day.
Bennett is also the GPAC Special Teams Player of the Week for a second consecutive time, also earning the award on Oct. 12.
The kick to close the first quarter marked 102 career points for Bennett, who ended the game with 106 after four more made PATs. She eclipsed Brittany Ryan, who scored 100 career points at Lebanon Valley College, a record that, until Saturday, stood since 2010.
Northwestern is on the road Saturday, at Waldorf (Iowa), with kickoff set for 1 p.m. in Forest City.
