KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Ya’j Vance threw for 346 yards and three touchdowns, but his fourth score of the game was his biggest, a 13-yard scramble on the game’s final play that wrapped up a 36-35 win for Simpson (Calif.) over Southern Oregon.
Monday (Oct. 12), Vance was named PrestoSports NAIA Offensive Player of the Week.
Vance had a favorite target on Saturday, finding Ivan Huerta for all three of his touchdown passes, helping Huerta to a five-reception, 159-yard day receiving. Vance’s first two touchdown passes gave the Red Hawks leads of 9-0 and 16-14, and his longest of the day was a 66-yard pass to Huerta on the Red Hawks’ opening drive in the third quarter to regain a 23-22 lead.
Southern Oregon scored two more times, once at the end of the third and another to start the fourth quarter, but Simpson posted 13 unanswered points to close the game, ending on Vance’s 13-yard run as time expired.
The win was Simpson’s first conference win in program history and first-ever win over SOU. The Red Hawks are 3-3, 1-1 in the Frontier West, and they’ll host No. 11 Carroll (Mont.) Saturday at 1 p.m. PT.
