KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Anthony Lonergan is the PrestoSports NAIA Football Special Teams Player of the Week after recovering a fumbled punt in the end zone for the eventual game-winning touchdown in Benedictine’s 21-17 upset of No. 1 Grand View (Iowa), Saturday in Des Moines.
With Benedictine (Kan.) trailing in the fourth quarter, Lonergan pounced on a loose ball in the end zone – the result of a fumbled punt – to put the Ravens back in front. The touchdown proved to be the difference as Benedictine handed Grand View its first loss in 31 games and snapped the Vikings’ 73-game regular-season winning streak.
The sophomore safety from Leawood, Kan., also recorded two tackles in the victory, which pushed Benedictine to 3-1 and moved the Ravens to No. 5 in this week’s NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.
Benedictine returns home Saturday, hosting St. Ambrose (Iowa) at 1 p.m. CT in Atchison, Kan.
