KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Texas Wesleyan’s Haroon Aslam put together back-to-back 70s to start the Roadrunner Invitational last week in Georgia, but it was his 19th hole of the day during the final round that cemented a win and NAIA Men’s Golfer of the Week, when Aslam won the tournament with a par at The Farm Golf Club, in Rocky Face, Ga.
Aslam was 2-under par in each of his first two rounds, beginning with a strong start but an up-and-down first 18 holes. He made eagle at his third hole in the championship, the par-5 15th, and added birdies at No. 18, No. 1, and No. 4 to sit five under through 10 holes. Four bogeys dotted the card over the next seven holes, but a birdie on his final hole at No. 12 secured a 2-under 70 to begin the event.
He made seven pars to start the second round before a birdie at No. 2, his eighth hole of the day, and his only bogeys in the second 18 holes came consecutively, at No. 3 and No. 4. Aslam closed with three birdies in his final eight holes, marking a 4-under par start to the tournament.
In the final round, Aslam opened with back-to-back birdies, this time starting on No. 1, and he was even par through 13 holes before a double bogey at the 14th, but No. 15 and No. 18, which had been friendly all tournament to the senior, came through again. He birdied both holes, and ultimately won on the 55th hole of the tournament, in a playoff.
Texas Wesleyan finished third in the event, eight shots back of conference rival Oklahoma City and 12 off the pace of tournament host and champion Dalton State (Ga.). The Ramsare at home to close out the regular season next week, Monday and Tuesday, hosting the Texas Wesleyan Spring Invitational at Squaw Creek Golf Course in Willow Park, Texas.
