Faulkner linebacker RJ Randolph was in on three sacks that led to a pair of safeties to earn the NAIA's defensive award for Oct. 19.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Faulkner (Ala.) senior linebacker RJ Randolph is the PrestoSports NAIA Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 19, figuring on three sacks – two for safeties – in the Eagles’ 46-21 win over Andrew (Ga.).
It’s rare enough for a team to record a pair of safeties in a game, let alone two by the same player. But Randolph registered two sacks in the end zone, the first 39 seconds into the second quarter, putting Faulkner up 30-0. His next sack-for-safety was pivotal in the second half, as Andrew had climbed back in the game with three unanswered touchdown drives.
Randolph put two points on the scoreboard for the Eagles with 6:04 remaining, and two minutes later, he forced a fumble that led to a two-play Faulkner touchdown drive, putting an exclamation point on the 25-point win.
In all, Randolph was part of a defensive and special teams effort that set Faulkner up for 37 points with just 16 offensive plays.
The win got Faulkner back over .500, at 4-3, going into a non-NAIA game Saturday afternoon at home against the University of Fort Lauderdale. Kickoff in that game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
